“Free China: The Courage to Believe” to debut at Presbyterian Phoenix Colleges

Written by Rachel Ham
Saturday, 09 March 2013 21:22

Examining widespread human rights violations in China through remarkable stories, “Free China: The Courage to Believe” will premiere at Presbyterian College this month.

PC’s Russell Program in Media, Technology, and Society and the Program in Southern Studies will present the film and also host a discussion with director/producer/writer Michael Perlman, on Monday, March 18.

The event is set for 7 p.m. in Harrington-Peachtree 214. This film comes to PC as part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers.

From the award-winning director of “Tibet: Beyond Fear,” “Free China: The Courage to Believe” examines widespread human rights violations in China through the remarkable stories of Jennifer Zeng, a mother and former Communist Party member; Dr. Charles Lee, a Chinese-American businessman; and hundreds of thousands of peaceful citizens who are imprisoned, tortured and subjected to slave labor for their spiritual beliefs.

As political tensions rise in China with the latest corruption scandals surfacing, along with more than 100,000 protests occurring each year inside China, this timely documentary film provides new information that connects China’s widespread human rights violations with systemic unfair trade practices. The practices result in exporting many prison/forced labor products into the United States and state-sanctioned organ harvesting for profit.

The film also highlights how Internet technologies are aiding human rights activists in China and around the world by allowing uncensored information into closed societies. In addition, the film sheds light on how a re-emergence of traditional Chinese culture and spirituality are helping bring about a new China.

The Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers is a program of South Arts. Southern Circuit screenings are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. South Arts, a nonprofit regional arts organization, was founded in 1975 to build on the South’s unique heritage and enhance the public value of the arts.

South Arts’ work responds to the arts environment and cultural trends with a regional perspective. South Arts offers an annual portfolio of activities designed to address the role of the arts in impacting the issues important to our region, and to link the South with the nation and the world through the arts.

Free Thinking Film Festival in Ottawa
“Free China or Death by China” Press Conference& Screening
How China’s Rise and our Government’s China policies will shape our Future

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:(October 24, 2012) On Friday November 2ndat the Free Thinking Film Society will host a special press conference with the producers and special guests of “Free China: The Courage to Believe” and “Death by China”at the Library and Archives in Ottawa, Canada. With the US elections upon us, this timely press conference and panel discussion, chaired by Festival director Fred Litwin, will raise important issues related to how China’s rise and our China policies will shape North America’s future as well that of the rest of the world.

Speaking at the press conference will be Kean Wong, producer of the award-winning film “Free China: The Courage To Believe”and Jennifer Zeng, Chinese slave labor camp survivor and best-selling author of the book,“Witnessing History: One Woman’s Fight for Freedom and Falun Gong.”

Also joining the press conference will be Greg Autry, co-author of the book Death by China: Confronting the Dragon, a major release from Prentice Hall and a book that has proved to be influential in America policy circles.Mr. Autry will discuss China’s tightly integrated economic, military, propaganda, and espionage strategies and their implications for Western governments and businesses. He will also discuss the growing dangers of a “China induced” regional or global conflict and the significant, though often unanalyzed risks that threat might present to Western firms and investors betting on China.

At 7:00 pm, on the same day, the Festival will feature the Canadian premiere of “Death by China,” a film about the increasingly destructive economic trade practices of a rapidly rising China.Author and producer of the film, Greg Autry will also be in attendance.

Screening at 12pm on Saturday Nov 3rd at the festival will be Free China: The Courage to Believe, a co-production between NTD Television and World2Be Productions. The film examines the widespread human rights violation inside China – from forced abortions to live organ harvesting of prisoners of conscience – through the remarkable stories of best-selling author Jennifer Zeng, a mother and former Communist Party member, and Dr. Charles Lee, an American Chinese businessman. Both Jennifer and Charles along with hundreds of thousands of peaceful citizens in China, were tortured and subjected to slave labor for their spiritual beliefs in the Falun Gong meditation practice.

This film also documents multi-national companies that profit from slave labor and reveals how anti-censorship internet technologies and a re-emergence of traditional values are bringing about a new China, one that will finally be free of the Chinese Communist Party.
